In a move to garner some revenue, California has ordered more than 180,000 small businesses, such as law firms and child care companies to register with its Board of Equalization and file a new return to pay use taxes.

These taxes are owed on out-of-state purchases, such as computers and equipment used in a business, on which no sales taxes were paid.
