Filing information tax forms and returns electronically
Instead of mailing paper copies of W-2 forms and 1099's to the IRS, you can submit everything electronically for free using the Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) System.
Large companies filing 250 or more such returns must use the system; small businesses can opt to do so.
Aside from convenience and saving paper, e-filing gives you an automatic 30-day extension of time to file to March 31, 2011.
To use the FIRE System, file Form 4419, to request authorization and receive your five-character Transmitter Control Code (TCC) needed for e-filing.
