S. 1867 [Worldwide Indefinite Detention Without Charge or Trial]

The Worldwide Indefinite Detention Without Charge or Trial Provision in S. 1867 [http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d112%3As.1867:] will be on the Senate floor on Monday, Nov. 28, 2011:

"The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised his concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself. The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday. The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and passed in a closed-door committee meeting, without even a single hearing."

Learn to Earn Act Introduced to Congress

Dear Friends,

Yesterday a bill was just introduced to Congress that argues that the skills, the knowledge and the mindset learned by young people through their participation in entrepreneurship education programs are critical to their success in the 21st century.  The “Learn to Earn Act of 2011” (H.R. 3445), introduced by Congressman Dave Loebsack of Iowa, seeks to incentivize states, and local school districts, to implement high quality entrepreneurship programs in communities all across the country.

This bill will help spark even greater interest around the U.S. in arming our young people with the basic skills, the motivation and the aspiration to seize hold of their futures, stay in school and plan for successful futures. When young people learn to see opportunity in the face of obstacles and are equipped with the mindset of an entrepreneur, they are better prepared for the workforce, for higher education and to be the job creators of the future.

Here is your chance to speak up about inspiring young people from low-income communities to see their futures differently through entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial mindset.

Contact your local representative and let them know that you think entrepreneurship education must be introduced to more people at a young age for their benefit and to support a more vibrant economy for generations to come.

Economic Inequality: Seeds of Coming Violent Clashes

Economic Inequality: Seeds of Coming Violent Clashes
Rawlein G. Soberano, Ph.D.

Income inequality has deteriorated over the past several years and is at its highest level since the Great Depression. It is a time bomb lurking in the dark with dire consequences. But this is not a new trend. Income inequality has been gnawing at the core of our being for the past 30 years. In the late 1980s and late 1990s, the US has experienced two long periods of sustained economic growth. Yet from 1980 to 2005, more than 80% of the total increase in American income went to the top 1%. Economic growth was more sluggish in the first decade of this century, but the decade saw productivity increase by about 20%. More of the increase translated into wage growth at middle and lower incomes, an outcome that baffles many economists. The 2008 financial crisis exacerbated the trend—the top 1% of earners has been feeding even more greedily at the trough for decades.

Many Americans who once accepted or even cheered such inequality now see that gain as ill-gotten, as undeserved, as generated from cheating. Most of all, the legal system that once served as the legitimate anchor for the rule of law, that common set of rules that are equally applied to all, has now become irrevocably corrupt and is seen as such. Republicans want the American people to close their eyes to this inequality and accuse anyone who bring it to their attention as guilty of sowing “class warfare.” They use this rhetoric to distract people from what is going on.

There is nothing intellectually dishonest and sort of gutter politics to come out of the failure of the American Jobs Act to pass because of Republican obstruction and destructive agenda to make Pres. Obama a one-term president. That was all their focus and what consumed them in the past three years. They hope Americans would not see their shenanigans and blame BHO if unemployment continues to be high. As usual, they resort to political rhetoric calling for the dismissal of police officers from the force for lack of funds, though it was their economic policies that crashed Wall Street. Their demagoguery against teachers, police officers and firefighters, many of whom belong to unions was the product of their political gamesmanship in playing with people’s lives to stay in power. VP Joe Biden called it like it is without the verbal games of saying what is politically acceptable while hiding the truth.

Confrontations are entering a dangerous new stage. Many city officials are under pressure from constituents, tired of unsightly tent cities, dead grass and unhealthy conditions. The cost to already struggling municipalities which must protect and clean up after the protesters is growing. In Atlanta, it’s more than $300k; in San Francisco, more than $100k; NYC overtime costs have risen to $3.4 million; in Minneapolis, it’s $200k; in Boston, the total tally is $2 million and counting. This is money they can use to cover other expenditures, like food for the hungry, heating oil for the elderly, shelter for battered women, inter alia. Tea Party groups across the country are accusing local and state governments, charging them fees to hold rallies in public parks, while allowing Occupy protesters to set up camp for free.

Herman Cain talks about the envy of OWS over the success of the rich. We love winners, but hate cheaters. Wall Street bankers have been guilty of theft, fraud, market manipulation and other shameful machinations in the past 15 years and got away with it. This is the consequence of self-regulation of their own conduct which  doesn’t work. It takes a lot of balls to accuse protesters as just jealous of their hard-earned money. Where was the class-hatred during the Reagan years when it was something to crow about by openly dumping on the poor? Where was the envy in the last two decades when unions shrank and CEO pay, relative to the median pay, started to rise in leaps and bounds?

Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of Congress and don’t believe their representatives share their priorities. Most of them don’t share the average American experience. Congress has become an exclusive club that counts 245 millionaires (66 in the Senate and 179 in the house). While 1% of Americans are millionaires, 66% of the senators and 44% of House members are. Even the 2010 elections, with its battle cry of “taking our country back,” a freshman class of senators has a medium net worth of close to $4 million. Their political operation tells us that to run a campaign involves very deep pockets..

House ethics rules dictate that a lawmaker should “never use any information coming to him confidentially in the performance of his governmental duties as a means for making a private profit.” But House rules are only enforced on an internal basis, and breaches of the rules are often just lightly punished. A bill by two Democratic Representatives (Louise Slaughter of NY and Tim Waltz of MN) was introduced to stop insider trading in Congress. It only got 14 Congressional sponsors.

Paul Ryan, the GOP evangelist of mendacity, double-talk, and fear-mongering has the impudence to accuse Pres Obama of “preying on the emotions of fear, envy and resentment” and “sowing social unrest.” His rationale seems to be that by proposing the American Jobs Act, the President is making people mad that Republicans won’t support it. With the reaction generated by the messenger, the Republicans know that BHO is right and are afraid that they have been exposed for their diabolical meanness. The irony regarding the American Jobs Act is that its individual provisions have had bipartisan support in the past.

The Republican camp that increasingly acts not like a traditional peacetime political organization, but more like an apocalyptic cult or one of the authoritarian movements from the early 20th century European history. This was a form of violence and serious escalation even from the days of GWB when the party was mostly limited in its willingness to use human beings as pawns in a homicidal ploy for political power. Bush and Karl Rove sacrificed Iraqi lives and the lives of American servicemen for oil and votes. This current group of Republicans, many of them criminals, cheaters and goons, held hostage the American people and threatened to destroy them if its didn’t get what it wanted.

Most people are accustomed to thinking of America as a stable nation where politics is not a life or death issue but more of a topic at the dinner table. Now it seems to be headed in the opposite direction where 99% who have access to guns and other weapons (thanks to the NRA) have nothing (they’ve already lost everything to the greed of Wall Street) more or very little to lose in the economy that has destroyed their lives. The problem with easy access to guns and their proliferation is that it takes only one hothead to open Pandora’s box to create mayhem, spill blood and spark violence. Desperate people do stupid things that they would otherwise not do under normal circumstances. But these are not normal times with the number of poor out of a job, hungry, especially their children, while Wall Street makes bets on their bad luck and grim future.

Knowing what happened in the past when Wall Street was betting even against their own products that they were selling investors, it would not be surprising if it anticipates making money from OWS, from the potential violence that can erupt into bloody and deadly confrontation. Is Goldman Sachs following eerily these developments, keeping track of the thousands who are passionate in expressing their deep discontent with the status quo? They must have already started asking themselves how they can make money off them and establish a special fund, e.g., Global Rage Fund whose investment objective is to monetize OWS protests as they spread around the globe. They must be confident there’s plenty of money to be made from this chaos, e.g., police batons and bandages, barricades and stun guns, replacement to broken windows and overturned vehicles, and construction materials. Through market manipulation, Goldman Sachs and (Tim) Geithner’s Marauding Raiders are poised to corner this new “futures” trade, and the consequences will be deadly this time around. What Does Your Inner Voice Say?

What Does Your Inner Voice Say?

"The loudest and most influential voice you hear is
your own inner voice, your self critic.
It can work for you or against  you,
depending on the messages you allow."
~Keith Harrell

We all have an internal critic inside commenting on our thoughts, behavior and emotions.  Sometimes we call it our "conscience" as when it warns us against doing something wrong.  Sometimes it is the voice of a dissatisfied parent or someone else significant from our past.  Sometimes it is our own voice, judging us.  If you are a perfectionist, that inner voice will NEVER be satisfied.  If you instruct your inner voice to give you credit for doing something that is difficult for you, or for making the effort, you will encourage yourself to try harder and do better with your next effort.  If your inner voice is always critical, you'll find yourself resisting doing things you might succeed at.  When all you get is critical, you'll find yourself giving up.  You might even begin to believe that you "aren't good enough" or that you "don't know enough."  Tame that inner voice so that it works with you instead of against you.

This week:   Pay attention to your "inner voice."  With each message, evaluate "Is this true?"  You may discover that if you are truthful you will recognize that you are too hard of yourself.  Would you talk this way to a child?  Would you talk this way to your spouse?  Would you talk with way to an employee?  If not, why are you being so critical of yourself?  Ask yourself "What is the best way to get the best performance?"  At least ONCE during the week, modify that inner voice to be supportive rather than critical.  Pay attention to the difference--which way brings better results?

SBA Kicks Off Young Entrepreneur Series, Events Slated for Five Cities

SBA Kicks Off Young Entrepreneur Series
*Five-city tour offers young people advice and tools to start and grow businesses

Release Date: November 2, 2011
Contact: Dan Crawford (202) 205-6920
Release Number: 11-61
Internet Address: http://www.sba.gov/news

WASHINGTON – The White House and the U.S. Small Business Administration announced today the launch of the Young Entrepreneur Series (YES), which will connect young and aspiring entrepreneurs with SBA officials, local business advisors and resources to help them start or grow their own small business.

“For our economy to thrive in the 21st century, we must set about creating the next generation of entrepreneurs,” said SBA Deputy Administrator Marie Johns. “Young Americans need to know that starting a business is a viable alternative to going to work for somebody else. There is a clear and urgent need to create more jobs for young Americans, and encouraging business ownership is an important way to meet that goal.”

SBA will hold five YES forums that will reach a broad audience, including young veterans, urban and rural entrepreneurs, and others.

Dates and locations include:
• November 7, San Diego, Calif., Veteran Young Entrepreneurs
• November 9, Ames, Iowa, Rural Young Entrepreneurs
• November 17, Charlotte, N.C., Young Entrepreneurs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions
• November 29, Tahlequah, Okla., Native American Young Entrepreneurs
• December 1, Milwaukee, Wis., Apprenticeship to Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship among young people remains below average and young entrepreneurs face unique challenges. With youth unemployment twice the national average in many communities, particularly communities of color and veterans, the Obama administration recognizes a need to promote and better support the efforts of young people to create jobs for themselves and others.

Many SBA programs, such as microloans, business counseling and training, are useful to young entrepreneurs. The YES forums are part of a larger effort to reach out to young people and let them know the federal government has tools to help them start, grow and succeed as small business owners.

The forums will be livestreamed at www.sba.gov/youngentrepreneurs. Participants can also follow along on Twitter using the hashtag #SBAyes. For more information or to watch the forums live, visit www.sba.gov/youngentrepreneurs.

Pres. Obama Must Share Blame for Wall Street̢۪s Implosion (Part II)

Pres. Obama Must Share Blame for Wall Street’s Implosion (Part II)

by Rawlein G. Soberano, Ph.D.

The tanking economy, high unemployment rate and ridiculously high gas prices are taking a huge toll on average Americans, but the Big Five oil companies (Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron, BP and Conoco Phillips) made a whopping $36 billion in profits in Q2 of 2011. Their minions and lapdogs in Congress (GOP) are fighting with fanatic subservience to their masters to hold on to their government subsidies. There are 140 Super PACs; one is generating $150 million in this election cycle to buy more lawmakers; they’re cheap. Poverty among Americans 65 and older is statistically unchanged in recent years because of Social Security. Republicans want their buddies to run it (the more accurate description is—to raid it).

“Authority” and “shared sacrifice” are Washington code words for preserving tax advantages and privileges for the wealthiest while transferring private debt and risk to the pubic on the back of working/middle class. Twenty-four million Americans are unemployed or underemployed and nearly $9 trillion n household wealth has vanished since the 2008 economic crisis. Over the last four years, 53% of black wealth has just disappeared (from 2005 to 2009). The mega-rich pay about 15% in taxes while the middle class fall into the 15% and 25% income tax brackets and then are hit with heavy payroll taxes to boot. Since 2000, nearly 12 million Americans have slipped out of the middle class and into poverty.

Are the demonstrators justified in their actions? A tax increase will damage America’s economic future and kill jobs (standard GOP inaccurate, false and misleading talking points) which sounds good and energizes their base (4% of voters are right wing, die hard, uneducated, misinformed, typically southern) but has very little support in fact. There is a $1.9 trillion sitting idle but large businesses are not hiring because they are waiting for a climate (more tax cuts and no regulations) that will fire up their greedy appetite. How they wish to do away with minimum wage, labor unions, extend the 40-hour week, require workers pay their own health insurance, eliminate minimum-age hiring and paid vacation, do away with government monitoring of hazardous materials and questionable practices!

Inequity in America has gone too far with 1% of its population owning more than what the 90% own together, where 400 families own more than the bottom 60% put together. This is the GOP paradox—they claim financial responsibility and debt reduction as their priorities but reject any deal that would cut the debt by at least $3 trillion. If they succeed in stealing the next presidential elections in 2012 as they had done in 2000 in FL and 2004 in OH, by disenfranchising 5 million voters (poor, young, elderly, African-Americans and Hispanics), there will be larger and more violent demonstrations. Their greatest problem is their growing inability to win national elections without cheating with the help of some high-priced criminals to make a mockery of our democracy. That would make the OWS gathering look like Mary Poppins. This time around the country is watching them with eagle eyes.

If we cut $1 trillion in defense spending, we lose 160,000 good, high-paying jobs, according to one defense contractors. That’s $6 million in public money per job. Looking at this, why don’t we just pay these people to burn money? For $6 million, 50 weeks a year, 40 hours a week, we can hire someone to burn $2,500 each hour ($1 per second, once you figure him lunch, breaks, training and fire safety seminars) and take home $500 for himself. We can also press the hit to make sure these people keep a roof over their heads. By comparison, the notion of giving all of the poor a few thousand dollars in welfare is just outrageous. The notion of subsidizing ordinary jobs directly, offering a few thousand dollars in outside funding to businesses that arrange to hire a few tens of millions of unemployed Americans, not even worth considering. After all, thousands of millions add up to billions of dollars, an inconceivable sum. What a boondoggle!

It was December 2008, and Pres. Barack Obama was the president-elect. He already made the decision to select Tim Geithner as his Treasury secretary and Lawrence Summers to head the National Economic Council, the top posts in his administration. Ron Susskind described this event clearly in his latest book, Confidence Men. Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) was incredulous at the selection of these two Wall Street sleaze balls. BHO ignored the warning, in spite of their role in the very financial disaster they were hired to fix. Geithner was accused as a tax evader. In 2006 the IRS determined that he did not pay taxes in 2003 and 2004 ($17,230) because he incorrectly (?) believed they were deducted at source by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Foreigners working at IMF don’t pay taxes but Americans do. Summers was a controversial figure but his position did not require Senate confirmation.

The worst aspect of the Treasury bailouts designed by Secretary Hank Paulson was that they were designed not to do what they were supposed to do. In many ways, it was not only a giveaway but one designed not to work.  He gave lip service to lawmakers obsessed with TARP (Troubled Assets Relief Program). Columbia Prof. Joseph Tiglitz described the pricey mechanism as a “gimmick to make sure they were giving away something worth nothing.” He added that if Paulson did this as an employee of Goldman Sachs, he would have been fired. He owned $500 million in Goldman Sachs stocks which he was forced to sell by accepting the job at Treasury. He didn’t pay any capital gains taxes (zero) on the sale of the stocks. His tax savings was $200 million, not a bad compensation for less than 3 years of work at a “public service” gig. He also got a nice salary and generous benefits. It sent the wrong message to others after him that a government job with conflicted interest is a fantastic tax dodge.

It was Tim Geithner, New York Federal Reserve president, who should have withdrawn after the Senate Finance Committee released a 30-page memo that makes him unfit to serve a Secretary of Treasury. He used his position to bail out his Wall Street buddies. Regardless of his knowledge of various programs, e.g., TARP, the man is dishonest and a cheat. Nobody is that indispensable. Larry Summers had pilloried the idea of regulating derivatives, the esoteric financial products, e.g., credit default swaps that led the way to sub-prime meltdown when he was at Treasury. He led the opposition against it. Geithner served under him in the Clinton administration, and both men had ties to Robert Rubin, the former Goldman Sachs Group’s executive who became Treasury secretary and chairman of Citigroup as that bank careened towards disaster. It’s accurate to say that these sleazy crooks converted their high-ranking government posts into Wall Street riches.

What is baffling is why BHO chose Geithner and Summers over former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker. It also shows flaws in his judgment, e.g. wrong timing on healthcare reform when 80% of Americans were happy with their coverage. He was a “brilliant amateur” but short on management experience, who has turned out just to be a smooth talker and turned his popular support into a tepid and reluctant approval for his job performance. He got elected in 2008 on “hope” and “change.” There is no hope when promises fell by the wayside and the leader gives in like a wet puppy to GOP demands, unreasonable as they had been. There is “no change” to count on when he can’t get this done, without the support of the American people, especially his supporters who are African-American, Hispanics, the young and the elderly whom he has taken for granted. His election in 2008 was a gratuitous victory handed him on a golden platter after 8 years of GWB and GOP quasi-criminal behavior, with at home spying on Americans and two wars abroad (lies about the non-existent WMD) at a cost of $1 trillion and 7k lives lost.

No one will question that BHO is a good orator. He fooled a lot of people getting elected (there was really not much contest against John McCain and Sarah Palin), pretending to help the middle- and lower-classes, end the winless wars, provide real healthcare reform (not just health insurance revisions) that enrich unfairly insurance companies), inter alia.  There is no distinction between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to support for and from Wall Street, Big Oil, Big Pharma, the MIC, the media. His Harvard hubris, his close ties to the rich elite and his lack of principles did not bode well for any positive change in the past two and a half years. But don’t count him out because that it is still his priority (hope and change) over everything else.

Polls show at least two-thirds of Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction. Consumer  confidence is diving south, consumer confidence is hitting 2-year lows, and majorities disapprove of BHO’s handling of the economy. His job approval was slumping down even before the global stock sell-off and twin-debt crisis in Europe and US which featured a US credit rating downgrade and chaotic talks on a deal to raise the debt ceiling. Many people believe BHO is a Wall Street tool (hisfundraising there was at $35k per person) who never intended to fulfill the promise of “change we believe in.” He lied about where his campaign money came from, he lied about supporting the public option, and he lied about the tax cuts. He was going to do something about it, fist off. Then he said we needed to accept this as a compromise. The only people he fights against are the people who elected him in the first place. No wonder the average American is disappointed at his job performance.

The nation was ready for change but BHO (traveling lecturer) chose the status quo. So much of the public anger, disappointment and frustration have been turned on a leader who failed to lead. Had the right-wing succeeded in winning both houses of Congress in 2010, they would have tried to cut government, and our lives will now be governed by corporations. We will have a government by corporations for corporate profit. It will be a cruel government, a government of foreclosures, outsourcing, union-busting and outrageous payments for every little thing. Some Democrats, in their disappointment at his job performance, even called him corrupt for buying into GWB’s corruption and made the Bush corruption his own. The good news for him is that there is enough time to bring about the change he promised, though he already wasted two and a half years in the process. (11-01-11)
